Care & Maintenance

At Made Studio and Workshop, we design and make furniture to last. Over the lifetime our pieces will need a little care and attention to ensure they can be enjoyed by generations to come.

Timber

Timber is a natural product that will respond to its environmental conditions. We recommend you avoid extreme variations in temperature and humidity as well as contact with liquids and heat.

Maintenance

  • Regularly wipe timber to remove dust and dirt.

  • Do not leave liquid to sit on timber surfaces as it will penetrate and may cause staining.

  • Wipe up spills immediately with a clean damp cloth.

  • Any stubborn stains can be removed with soapy water and a microfiber cloth and towel dry afterwards.

  • Do not use cleaners or polishes as these may cause permanent damage or colour variation to your furniture.

Two-pack (2-pack) information

For our dining tables, coffee tables and other furniture pieces we use the finishing process called two-pack (2-pack) lacquer to ensure the most premium, durable and aesthetically pleasing finishes that require minimal maintenance. This is the same for our Oils, Stains and Coloured finishes as all of them use the same final clear coating as additional protection.

Two-pack is a conscious choice for us to provide superior quality and aesthetics to our clients over other more intensive maintenance finishes like a wax coat which utilises a combination of solvents, and natural and artificial oils and requires regular reapplication.

Two-pack finishes consist of two parts - a base and a catalyst - and are generally much more resilient and hard-wearing than a single-pack lacquer finish. The base resin requires the addition of a catalytic activator to create a reaction that causes the combined lacquer to start to harden and cure.

Please note

Slab or underfloor heating can be damaging to solid timber products.  The heat causes the bottom side to dry out differently to the top which can cause bowing, warping or cracking. We advise that you do not keep solid timber pieces on underfloor heating.

The tone of the timber will alter over time with exposure to UV light, please protect timber from direct or reflected sunlight.

Take care when placing or moving unglazed ceramics and other items with an irregular base finish as they may scratch the surface as timber is considered a soft surface it is still able to be damaged by heavy objects and abrasive materials.

Upholstery

For our sofa, and other upholstered pieces that use fabric we often work with a range of fabrics. It is always best to check with the textile manufacturer what their specific care instructions are for your chosen fabric.

Our most common fabric is the Mokum Eternal range, within the James Dunlop range of fabrics. This is due to the Eternal range’s quality, feel and machine-washable flexibility.

To find the care instructions specific to the fabric used on your piece you can locate them here by searching for the name of the fabric used in your pieces.

If you need assistance locating the care instructions for your specific fabric please let us know and we can assist you. We offer a wide range of fabrics and each fabric requires unique handling.
